It’s been hot here lately. Like, really hot. Not the hottest it’ll get, but still. I’m not the greatest with heat, so I’ve been making my escape to the beach as often as possible. And I’m just loving it. Even though I’m not the biggest hot weather fan, I still LOVE summer. There is so much going on and there’s a sense of freedom in the air. And I wanted to share with you what I’m using this year to make the most of my longer days! So here is my list of my top 5 summer essentials.

Dogs are also a summer essential if you ask me!

2018 Summer Essentials

SPF

I’m about as pale as they come, but regardless of your skin color, sunscreen is IMPORTANT. I’ve definitely been guilty of forgetting to protect my skin, and man have I regretted it. Not only is there severe temporary discomfort, but there are some serious long-lasting side effects of forgetting the SPF. Skin discolorations and wrinkles may seem scary, but skin cancer is even scarier. Multiple friends and members of my family have dealt with the disease and it’s not something to screw around with. Even a glowing tan isn’t worth it. Trust me.

So what kind of sunscreen should you use? That’s honestly up to you. There is more and more research coming out that maybe chemical sunscreen isn’t the best for us, itself being linked to cancer. So I’ve started leaning towards more natural, physical sunscreens like the ones from Pacifica. With zinc oxide as the active ingredient, these sunscreens use minerals to protect your skin from the sun. Plus, they smell incredible, and the spray is even available in a version that gives you a gorgeous bronze tint! summer essentials sunscreen

Anything Cactus-Themed

If any of you follow me on Instagram, you know I’m obsessed with plants. Especially cacti and succulents. They’re just so fun! I also think cactus accessories make the cutest summer staples, bringing all the desert vibes to the beach or the pool. Although they don’t make this hat by Ariat anymore, you can still find other super fun cactus hats, like this one. But still put sunscreen on too. Better safe than sorry. The ring pictured with the hat is a cute stamped piece by a local artist that I’m obsessed with, REKinc, in Cambria, California. I’ve linked to her Etsy shop so you can show her some love.

Other fun cactus-themed items for some extra prickly summer fun: cactus pool floats, cactus margarita glasses, and cactus beach towels! Speaking of…

Beach (or Pool) Towels

Whether you’re a beach bum like myself, a lake lover, or prefer to be poolside, you need to get yourself a cute towel. I recently got this adorable pineapple pool towel at Ulta when I bought sunscreen, so it was even more reason to invest in SPF. But even if it’s not a “free gift” for buying something you were going to buy anyway, there are some super fun beach towels out there! I’m pretty in love with round beach towels, but find one that suits your vibe! summer essentials beach towel

An Insulated Water Bottle

This one is probably just as important as sunscreen. It’s way too easy to get dehydrated when out in the hot summer sun having fun. Find a water bottle, like this stainless steel one from Zoku, that can keep your water ice cold for ages! Even in the hot sun. I love this water bottle so much I also featured it in my “8 Things That Are Bringing Me Joy Right Now” post! I know beer, margs, and soda all sound delicious when you’re in your own little tropical paradise (or pretending your apartment pool is a tropical paradise). But seriously, staying hydrated can prevent some serious health problems and keep the fun going as long as you want. If you are choosing to consume *other* liquids, keeping those ice cold in a second water bottle ain’t a bad idea either! summer essentials water bottle

A Tote Bag to Carry it all

Don’t forget that whether you’re swimming in the pool or laying in the sand, you’re going to need to reapply that sunscreen. So having an adorable tote bag to carry all of your summer essentials is, in itself, an essential! My favorite tote, given to me by one of my best friends, says “Plant Lady is the new Cat Lady”. I’m obsessed. It literally fits me perfectly, and it’s the perfect way to carry my sunscreen, towel, book, water bottle, etc. Totes are great because they come in all shapes and sizes to suit your needs and just about every color and pattern to suit your style!

  1. That tote bag is hilarious Shannon, like I really laughed out loud when I read it! Perfect for you. What a score getting that fringed towel free with your purchase! I am going to check out that natural spray sunscreen, we have had some hot days here and I need to restock on the sunscreen already.

    1. Honestly I’ve been LOVING the sunscreen! Spent a few days this week at the pool and didn’t burn once! Plus the price is comparable to that of neutragena!

  2. I’ll have to check out the sunscreen. I love more natural products, and prefer to use zinc oxide. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Same here! I’ve been trying to get more and more into natural products, but it can be hard to find some that work that aren’t overly expensive! I really love this sunscreen because it actually works and it’s about the price of the neutragena stuff!

  3. I recently saw that hat in a local store and thought it was absolutely adorable! Thanks for sharing the info about the sunscreen. I love Pacifica products, so I will have to check this out! I absolutely love the summer months, heat and all! A trip to the beach sounds lovely!

    1. I’m enjoying these summer days too! But it was 101 today, which is a little on the toasty side for me. But the mornings are just amazing! And I honestly can’t recommend that sunscreen enough!

  4. My favorite thing in this post is the “anything cactus themed.” I concur. I’d also support “anything pineapple themed” too. 😉 Very fun ideas! 🙂

  5. Omg “Anything Cactus Themed” seriously made me LOL!! I used to live in the desert, & didn’t know why people were so obsessed with cactus/desert things, & now that I live in Georgia I seriously finally understand! Hahaha. Anyway, great read, & I love all of the goodies you mentioned 🙂

    1. haha thank you so much for reading! Georgia is quite a far cry from the desert, but luckily there are some pretty fun cactus-themed stuff out there!

  6. These are so cute. I love the color pattern, beautiful bright colors. insulated water bottles are a must.

    1. Thank you! I’m a big fan of bright colors and fun patterns in the summer! And I literally can’t live without my insulated water bottle!

  7. Love your post! I ALWAYS forget to wear sunscreen and I know I will regret it in the long run. Going to Bali in August and this post reminds me to not be stubborn and start wearing it as well as bring a water bottle 😀 Thanks girl for the great post! Looking forward to read more 🙂

    1. I’ve always wanted to go to Balie! I hope it’s the most amazing trip! Sunscreen is definitely a must, and finding one that suits your needs (i.e. natural, bronzing, SPF, etc.) is SO important! And finding one you WANT to wear is even better. Honestly that’s my fav part of the bronzing pacifica spray. I’m super pale so it gives me a nice, natural glow while protecting me from UV rays. But you gotta find one that works for you! Hope your summer is amazing!

    1. Literally obsessed with the pacifica bronzing sunscreen! I have an amazon link within the post if you’re interested! Thank you so much for reading!

    1. If you’re interested, there’s an amazon affiliate link within this post! I’m literally in love with the bronzing spray sunscreen because it gives such a nice glow while providing UV protection. And it’s water resistant for up to like 85 minutes or something great like that!

  8. We’ve had almost no sun here yet, but they keep telling me sunshine is right around the corner, so I’m going to have to get that sunscreen. I’d love to have something natural and that also smells great.

    1. I’m absolutely in love with it! If you check out the amazon links at the bottom of the page, I have it on there! And their branding is amazing isn’t it?
